Ok so what is an investment?  Well according to the online dictionary "investorwords.com" it is this:In finance, the purchase of a financial product or other item of value with an expectation of favorable future returns. In general terms, investment means the use money in the hope of making more money. So basically investing money into something to make money. Pretty simple really?

So what types of investments are available to investors?
Well there are literally hundreds of types of investments available to investors such as shares/stocks, cfd's (contract for difference), options, exchange trading on the FOREX etc.... These are all forms of stock market investing. Other forms of common investment of course include, houses or real estate such as shopping centers, factories and other types of real estate. Investments also come in the form of purchasing businesses, or investing in an idea such as a new invention.









Investments can also be things such as unique cars, jewelry, gold, and precious metals, or really anything that is in demand. Your super or 401k fund is also an investment. But because we are a stock market website we will stick with investments related to shares and the stock market.

As you can see there are really endless items or ideas that can be invested in. Basically the items just need to be something that is in demand or something that will one day be in demand and that has a limited number of..

You've probably heard the phrase before " don't put all your eggs in one basket". In our experience this is probably one of the best things you can learn about investing. Making sure you diversify your investments and create a balanced portfolio will make sure you spread the risk and avoid heartbreak and financial ruin and loss should some of your stocks take a dive.

We prefer long term investments as opposed to short term trades as long term investments are more passive, involve less time and commitment from you the investor and are a proven long term strategy.In fact we don't even call short term trading investing as investing refers to a long term strategy, just like the investments  in your super fund.There may also be tax benefits available to you for holding your investment for long periods of time which can be another incentive to invest for the long term.

When setting up a portfolio of shares to invest in you will find that every individual will want to set up their portfolio based on their individual risk tolerances and investment objectives. in general most people will never set up an investment portfolio with more than 5% allocated for high risk investments.
